New Denver Church has a Logo!

I have been working with the awesome guys at New Denver Church to come up with a logo for their church plant.  These guys rock…and couldn’t be more different from each other if they tried :)  The common thread in their questionnaires were Clean, Simple, Organic, Relational…well ok.  So we embarked on a logo journey that I think they are glad is finally at the end.  Design by committee is never optimal, but these guys are setting an amazing example of how to harness each person’s giftedness to create a new model of leadership that I respect and admire.

We all agreed we had the font treatment nailed down pretty early on.   I loved the way this logo brought in their concepts of self, other and the world.

After several iterations on this concept, leaf style, etc., Jason sent me a aspen leaf that they were interested in me trying out…they are in Colorado after all…they loved the two logos I presented …except that 2 guys liked one logo and the third liked the other one…

What to do…what to do.  The obvious answer was to create the stacked logo integrating the circle, an option I had already tried and hated.  I only send clients what I deem the best of the best…which might limit their options but ensures that they are getting my best work.   I had another idea. I am firm believer that the old rules of design and branding are just that O.L.D. old.  Just like interior designers no longer are tied to the rule that the cabinets in a house all have to be the same the way it was 20 years ago, brand designers are not tied to any hard fast rules anymore either.    Since the foundation of each logo was the same, typeface and use, colors, even the leaf was actually the same just arranged differently, why not use both.   And folks we have a winner!  Now they have 3 happy campers, with a logo that they can adapt to their needs, styles, etc. while developing a brand that is still consistent.   Some items will integrate both like the business cards below to develop the visual identity of the both/and inclusive brand.

Maybe I’ll get flack for breaking the rules, maybe I won’t.  Honestly I don’t care…at the end of the day I have happy clients, who ALL feel good about the direction their brand has taken, and who are excited to implement my work in launching their church.

Am I a photographer…or the photographer’s designer…

Actually, I’m both and I like it like that!

I have loved being able to help launch great, aspiring photographers who even in their fledgling careers are already doing amazing work.

I’ve only actually met Nathan Russell and his amazing wife Amy once…about 6 years ago when I was in Austin.  But we have remained friends…communicating through instant messaging.   But when you know people rock…you just do and you stay friends any way you can!

Nathan has recently taken the leap to start his own photography business and let me tell you this guy rocks my face off.   What didn’t rock my face off was the logo that Nathan was using (sorry Nathan but ya know its true).  So I jumped in to save him.  I started him off with the infamous Questionnaire…which he renamed “The Horror”…no seriously, when he sent the file back the file was named thehorror.doc.   But I think Nathan will now admit that the Horror was worth it for the end result.  He’s happy and one surer foot closer to becoming a famous photog!

While Nathan is second shooting a wedding for me in September, I am sure that very soon…I will be begging for the chance to 2nd shoot with him…

Get Out and Vote

Yes…November is far behind us…but there are several opportunities and amazing people for you to vote for.

First is Jen Lemen and Stephanie Roberts of Shutter Sisters

The truth is that I had pie in the sky dreams of winning this myself …but what they are doing is amazing and I am compelled to support their project, Picture Hope and spread the word…when something is good, it’s good no matter what.   Their chances are not pie in the sky at all!  They are already #3…way to go ladies!

If in the process of helping these amazing ladies win you look at my project and think its kinda swell…well vote for me to.  While I have no delusions of winning (my girls Jen & Stephanie are gonna take the grand price I know it!) a little vote love does a girl good!  And will hopefully help get those sponsors fired up!

Another necessary vote is for the amazing Stephanie Osborne.  She has not only been a great mentor but a great friend.  Her fabulous ring shot has made it into the top 10 and deserves everyone’s vote.

So come on peeps….get out there and vote!
